Thankful Leaves – A New Thanksgiving Tradition

Thanksgiving is right around the corner.  I lost time somehow, although that seems to be a common occurrence these days.  I think it’s a side effect of being a parent.  That, and Thanksgiving is early this year – which I don’t mind at all, because it gives me more time to close out fall and get ready for (and enjoy) the Christmas season!

Since having Reaghan, I’ve been wanting to start some of our own little traditions for the holidays.  As I’m sure you have, too, I’ve seen many different takes on expressing the things you’re thankful for each year:  little notecards at a place setting, going around the table and having everyone share before eating dinner, some kind of craft…the ideas are endless.

I’ve chosen a craft – I like that it’s something we can easily keep and read year after year.  Even when life seems extra-challenging, there are always things to be thankful for – and changing our perspective and focusing on the positives can be a powerful way to lift our spirits.  I want to set that kind of example for my girl – and myself.

Earlier this year, I crafted a branch tree for my house.  I had cut a few small branches from some of our trees, lightly spray-painted them a metallic champagne color, and stuck them in florist’s block in a cute, farmhouse-style vase.  I like the rustic simplicity and that I can decorate throughout the seasons.

A branch tree I made from spray painting a few branches cut from our trees in our yard.

For Thanksgiving, it’s decorated with fabric and paper leaves I crafted with some jute string.  Simple.  Easy.  Kinda cute.  On the paper leaves, I wrote each family member’s name and the year, and asked them to write down (or, in Reaghan’s case, tell me) the things they’re most thankful for this year.  Then, we hung them on our little branch tree. I’m thrilled with this idea, and I look forward to continuing this tradition through the years.

To make these little leaf ornaments, you’ll need:

  • Paper leaves
  • Jute string
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pens
Leaves, string, glue and pens are all you need for this little craft!

Really, you can use what you wish as far as string and writing utensils – I’m sure even regular craft glue will work fine, too.  I also had some leftover faux leaves that I decided to make into ornaments, too – ya know, while I was at it.  I found all of my supplies at Hobby Lobby, but these are pretty common so I’m sure you can find them at most craft/hobby stores.

First, have everyone write their names, the year and what they’re thankful for on the back of their leaf.  Then, unroll some string, make a loop, and tie a knot at the end, creating a hanger for your ornament.  Pull tight and cut near the knot.

Drop a small amount of hot glue on the knot and gently place on the back of the leaf, near the stem, and allow to dry.  Done!

When all the glue is cool, hang your ornaments where you choose and when you see them, you’ll be reminded of the wonderful things in your life.

The finished product – simple leaves to display in your home…reminding you of the blessings in your life

Other displaying ideas might be to:  create a garland for your mantle or for above a window or door; use cute pushpins or magnets and pin to your family’s board; use as place cards at the table.

What are your favorite ways to recognize your blessings at Thanksgiving?  Does your family have a favorite Thanksgiving tradition?  I’d love to hear!

Blessings!

Sharon
